2019 report

The Oregon Climate Change Research Institute (OCCRI) is housed at Oregon State University, and has a mandate from the legislature to achieve a climate-prepared Northwest by building a climate knowledge network, cultivating climate-informed communities, and advancing the understanding of regional climate, impacts, and adaptation. Periodically, OCCRI examines the current status of Oregon’s climate, and releases a report summarizing the science. This is called the Oregon Climate Assessment Report, and the 4th version of this was released at the end of January 2019.

Oregon is experiencing major climate impacts. In August 2018, Portland and the Willamette Valley experienced some of the worst air quality on the planet owing to smoke from wildfires near and far.

Climate change touches all corners of Oregon, but our frontline communities are most vulnerable. These include the economically disadvantaged and those who depend on natural resources for their livelihood: rural residents including Native Americans. Ranchers in southern and eastern Oregon reported significant economic losses caused by lack of water from a low winter snowpack and a hot and dry summer.
